How does admission to Kathmandu University’s engineering programmes work?

Kathmandu University admits every engineering student through one test it runs itself, the KUCAT-CBT: 120 multiple-choice questions in two hours, 40 each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, scored adaptively from 0 to 2220 with no negative marking, so a run of correct answers is worth far more than the same answers scattered. You need a +2 with GPA 2.0 or 50% and Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in both years; Computer, Geomatics, Architecture and AI also accept Computer Science in place of Chemistry. In 2026 the cycle ran from a 17 June notice to admission lists on 4, 11, 14, 18 and 19 August, and the rank list of 28 July carried 4,673 names, 1,671 of them for Computer Engineering. The university’s own 2082/83 fee structure prices every four-year BE at Rs 9,60,000 and Architecture at Rs 10,97,000. There is no affiliated engineering college: the regulator registers two schools, both at Dhulikhel, and nothing else.

Which answer you need

This section covers a system that works differently from IOE at every step, and the differences are the point of reading it. The test is adaptive rather than fixed, the fee is one published figure for the whole degree rather than a per-semester table with two seat pools, the lists come from the school’s own admission committee rather than a central portal, and there are no affiliated colleges to compare. Six answers cover the test, the eligibility, the calendar, the syllabus, the money and the lists; the seventh covers what the university actually runs.

Two facts change behaviour most. The rank list and the programme-wise score lists are not offers, and KU prints that on both; the offer is the School of Engineering’s admission notice, and you must appear in person with originals within its window. And the price is a single figure for the whole programme, published by the university and revised each year, which is the one thing no other engineering route in Nepal gives a family in writing before they apply.
